Emergency Quick Disconnect Specialists

Rental and Sale of high-pressure hose Emergency Quick Disconnect devices

About Us

Flint Subsea sells and rents a variety of high-pressure Emergency Quick Disconnect (EQD) devices for hoses. Our field proven equipment provides a means to disconnect, passively or on demand, in the event of a drift-off or drive-off event.

Our devices can be mounted in flexible downlines; coiled tubing systems; between subsea assets; or between vessels and platforms. The devices have been used for well intervention; decommissioning; and commissioning.

Our DNV Type Approved Mid-Line Weak Link EQD is a full-bore, straight through, pressure balanced device, suitable for operating in 3000 meters of water and 15000 psi internal pressure. Our EQDs separate under excessive hose tensile loads allowing internal barriers to close and includes the capability to be disconnected on demand, removing the risk of excess hose loads.

Founded in 2013, an ISO 9001 business, we have provided EQD devices and systems to clients globally.

Products

 Mid Line Weak Link EQD

The Mid Line Weak Link EQD, used subsea or topside can be mounted into any hose string or below coiled tubing providing protection to infrastructure, personnel and the environment for a range of media.

Well Kill Connector

The Flint Subsea Kill Line Connector is designed for subsea intervention packages as well as subsea pumping systems.  The flexible hose section facilitates angular disconnects, thereby ensuring a straight pull on the packaged EQD.

Tension Pin Override System

A deployment aid, the tension pin override system allows tensile loads greater than the break load of the tension pin to be applied.  Useful for deployment and recovery

Hydraulic (active) disconnection

All Flint Subsea EQDs are supplied with the "active" disconnection capability.  No external cylinders are required.

Features

Type Approved

We hold a type approval with DNV to API 17G.

Full Bore

All our equipment features a full, straight-through unobstructed bore.  This facilitates high-flow with low pressure drops.

Pressure Balanced

Our design is pressure balanced which means the force on the device is zero, regardless of pressure or depth.

Active Disconnect Capability

Our EQDs can be disconnected "actively" by pumping hydraulic pressure into a port on the side of the connector.  This removes all damaging tensile loads being applied to the hose

Tension Bolts

Select the theme that suits you. Each theme in the Mobirise website building software contains a set of unique blocks.

High Pressure

We have type approvals, designs and equipment operating with working pressures up to 15000 PSI and test pressures over 22500 PSI.

Flint Subsea Complete Rigorous High-Angle Testing

Flint Subsea, a global supplier of Emergency Quick Disconnect (EQD) systems, continue to develop and perform world first testing on its range of mid-line Emergency Quick Disconnects.

Testing of the midline Emergency Quick Disconnect devices has traditionally presented several challenges including, most significantly, performing angle disconnect and preventing discharge of the internal fluid during disconnection. The latter is critical to prove that the device would be capable of disconnecting when there is significant volumes present, upstream or downstream, maintaining internal pressure.

In a first, Flint Subsea performed a complete function test on their device at 15 degrees with it connected to a 2” Black Eagle hose and the pressure at 690bar.

In what is believed to be unique, in testing, the Flint Subsea Mid-Line EQD is able to maintain pressure throughout the disconnect stroke without discharge or requirement for external accumulation. This is achieved through its pressure balanced design and integrated check valves.

The testing, witnessed by DNV, was performed as part of certification work for a system to be deployed by a major client in the APAC region.

Gareth Black, Flint Subsea technical director said, “the continued, and regular, testing of our device in increasingly harsh setups is showing how robust and reliable our device really is. We can go to bed at night knowing that in the event that one of our fleet is called upon to disconnect at full working pressure and high-angle, that it will do so, every time.”.

Flint Subsea supply new ½” Mid-Line Weak Link

Flint Subsea have launched their smallest, ½” Mid-Line Weak Link to-date. The equipment was supplied to a major service company operating in the Caspian Sea with delivery in only 7 weeks.

The service company contacted Flint Subsea requiring a small connector, outside of the normal range of rental Mid-Line Weak Link EQDs. The new connector was designed, manufactured, assembled and tested in a short 7 week lead-time.

The ½” vented mid-line weak link is equipped with shear pins to allow it to disconnect when the hose tension exceeds a predetermined limit, thereby protecting the downline from damaging forces and facilitating subsea fail close valve operations. All testing was performed in-house and included a full scale break-test at full working pressure to demonstrate that the device separated at the correct load and also separated consistently at this load over a number of disconnection cycles – a key requirement of reliable and predictable operations.

Flint Subsea have been renting and selling Mid-Line Weak Links to clients for several years, building a significant client base and growing specialist knowledge associated with emergency quick disconnect devices. “Application of our expertise and bespoke design tools enabled us to turn this special project around in a very short time period”, said founder and technical director Gareth Black.

Flint Subsea achieves DNV Type Approval for Mid Line Weak Link

Flint Subsea are proud to have been awarded DNV Type Approval for their Mid-Line Weak Link Emergency Quick Disconnect (EQD) equipment.

The EQDs are mounted mid-line, either subsea or topside, and used to mitigate against vessel drift or drive off when performing pumping operations. The design features the ability to disconnect passively or actively when tension in a deployed hose subsea exceeds a predetermined limit. Upon disconnection, valves close off to prevent egress of the hose contents to the environment as well as sea water ingress if working at sub-ambient conditions.

The DNV Type Approval covers 2" systems up to 15000 PSI with a range of end connections and operating temperatures. The design was assessed against, and found to comply with, API 17G, 6A and DNV OS E 101.

Flint Subsea’s technical director Gareth Black commented on the achievement, “We have been supplying these systems globally since 2017 and the addition of the Type Approval demonstrates our commitment to the quality of our products and will significantly streamline the supply of our standard product range".
